For those who don't already subscribe, 'The Zombie Times' is a regular electronic newsletter aimed at fans of everything to do with the undead. The May issue continues with the usual mixture of news items, short articles and reviews of recent books, films and games.
My personal highlight in the latest issue was the interview with Gary Reed, the creator of the 'Deadworld' series of zombie comics. These have been published intermittently since the 1980s but the interview gives details of the latest incarnation, 'Deadworld: War Of The Dead'. This is a five issue series being published with great fanfare by IDW Books throughout August 2012, with one issue being released each week. The storyline sounds pretty dramatic, revolving around zombies, a lone human outpost and a group of lepers! Reed says he has written it to be of as much interest to people new to the 'Deadworld' series as those already familiar with his work. This is definitely one for those who like their zombies in comicbook form.
There are lots of other interesting items in this issue though. The calendar includes early notice of Film 4's FrightFest in London on the August Bank Holiday weekend and the Sixth UK Festival of Zombie Culture, which will take place in Leicester's Phoenix Square on 17 November. If you want to be more actively involved in zombie films, there are two interesting articles about upcoming projects that need extras, one in Devon in early July and the other in the North East of England later in the summer.
If you want to try your hand at a zombie survival weekend, there is an item about 'The Last Survivors', which sounds like great fun, as long as you're ready to be scared witless. On the other hand, if you're looking for something a bit less immersive, there are reviews of three different zombie board games that may be more up your street, along with the usual short items about new zombie novels and DVDs.
Finally, there's an interesting article about The FleshKrafter, an artist who makes all sorts of weird and wonderful artworks and sculptures on horror themes and sells them through eBay.
The May issue of 'The Zombie Times' is filled with everything that any fan of the undead could possibly want to know ahead of the coming apocalypse. Given that you can also try to win most of the items featured, via the huge numbers of competitions on their website, there's really no reason not to get a copy. Don't wait until there's a knock on your door...
